Three Years Old
There was never any question about it. The theme of Sean’s third birthday party would be ‘airplanes’.
“Why are you talking about this now?” asked Dad when Gram & Mommy started planning for the party in January. “It’s five months before his birthday.”
“You don’t understand,” said Gram. “We have to plan ahead.” What she didn’t say was that she and Mom just loved planning a birthday party for Sean.

The Secret Ranger
Captain Mitchell was very worried. He had always been able to depend on the Lightspeed Rescue Power Rangers to defend the people of earth but this time things were different.
Diabolico had invented a very bad and powerful poison gas called XR2 and at just the right time, he was going to spray it on the earth and make all the people sick. Then, he and his monsters were going to take over the world!
Using the computers at the Lightspeed Rescue training base and with the help of the Rescue Rangers, Captain Mitchell had located where Diabolico had hidden the XR2 until he was ready to use it. He had put it deep in a narrow hold inside a dormant volcano. That was the big problem! That deep narrow hole was 100 feet deep down to the bottom and it was no wider than 2 feet across. All of the Rangers were too big to fit in the hole. None of them could go down using a rope to hold them to get the box that held the XR2 in it.
“What can we do?” asked the Rangers.
“We must find a way to get that box of XR2 out of there without breaking it! But how?” said Captain Mitchell.
Everyone tried to think of a way to get the XR2 out of the hole. Finally, Ryan, the Titanium Ranger, said, “You know, I was at a karate tournament a few weeks ago and I saw this kid. He was about six years old and he was really good! He won first place in his division. Also, he was tall and slender. Just the size we need to get down that hole!”
“Hold on, Ryan!” said the Captain. “We can not use a child so young to do such a dangerous job!”
“I know it is a lot to ask of a kid, sir,” said Ryan. “But there was something special about him. I think he could do it!”
“OK, Ryan. You find out who he is and where he lives. We will talk to him and see if he is brave enough and strong enough to do this job. Also, we must talk to his parents. They must give their permission for this,” said the Captain.
Ryan called the karate tournament people to find out the name and address of the six year old that had won the first place trophy. The boy’s name was Sean Smith and he lived in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.
Captain Mitchell called Sean’s parents and told them all about the problem with the XR2. At first, they were very afraid for Sean’s safety but Captain Mitchell told them that he and the Power Rangers would do everything they could to keep him safe. “Well,” they said, “if Sean thinks he can help save the earth. We must let him try.”
Sean was outside playing in his backyard when he looked up and saw Ryan walking toward him. He could not believe his eyes! The Titanium Ranger was in his backyard!
“Hi Sean” said Ryan. “Do you know who I am?”
“Oh yes!” said Sean. “You’re Ryan, the Titanium Ranger!”
“That’s right, Sean,” said Ryan. “And I need your help.”
“My help?” asked Sean. “You need my help?” Sean’s heart was beating very fast!
“Yes” explained Ryan as he told Sean the whole story about Diabolico and the XR2. He told him the problem they were having getting it out of that deep narrow hole. “Are you a brave boy, Sean?” he asked.
“I think so,” said Sean. “But some things do scare me.”
“Yeah, I get afraid sometimes too” said the Ranger. “But if you really prepare, you can usually handle almost anything.”
“I guess so,” said Sean.
“Well, here’s the deal Sean. We need you to train with us for a few days and if you are strong enough, we want you to be the one to go down and get that XR2!”
Sean caught his breath. Now his heart was beating very, very fast! It was really pounding! “OK” he said. “I will try.”
“Good for you! I think you will be a really great Junior Power Ranger! Tomorrow is Saturday. I will pick you up very early to start your training. Goodbye until then.” Ryan turned and walked away.
“Can this really be happening?” thought Sean.
Just then Ryan came back around the house. “Sean” he said. “You do know you must keep all this secret? No one can know what you are going to do except your parents. Captain Mitchell has already talked to them, so tell no one, OK?”
“OK” promised Sean. “I won’t tell anyone.”
“Good! Get a good night’s rest and I will see you tomorrow,” said Ryan.
Early the next morning, Ryan came in his jeep to pick Sean up. They drove to a secret airport where they boarded a big Rescue helicopter. The helicopter flew them a long way and then landed on top of a submarine that was surfaced on the ocean. When they were aboard the sub, it dove deep down in the ocean to the secret Lightspeed Rescue Headquarters and Training Base.
Sean was amazed at all he was seeing! Was this really happening? Just then they came to the room where Captain Mitchell and the rest of the Rangers were waiting.
“Welcome, Sean, to Lightspeed Rescue” said Captain Mitchell. Each Ranger shook Sean’s hand and told him that they were sure he was going to be able to help them. “Here is what you must do,” said the Captain. “Go to the training center with the Rangers. You will need to work on getting your arms and legs very strong. You must work very fast. We don’t have much time.”
Sean and the Rangers started to work. Sean ran laps as fast as he could. He climbed up and down long ropes hanging over cliffs. He worked on all his karate moves. “You are doing really good,” Ryan told him. “But, all Rangers need extra help.” He reached into his pocket. “This is yours. It’s a morpher. Captain Mitchell had it made just for you. It makes you feel odd the first time you use it but it will make you much stronger and faster. Here, try it.”
Sean took the morpher and put it on his wrist like a watch. Ryan showed him which button to push. Sean took a deep breath and pushed the buttons. Suddenly he saw a bright light and he could feel himself becoming stronger! When he looked down at his body, he saw that he was dressed as a Purple Lightspeed Rescue Ranger. “Wow! I’m a Ranger!” said Sean.
“OK, Sean, go through the training course again and see how much better you can do it.” Ryan told him.
Sean took off like a shot! He went through the whole training course in just a few minutes! “I think you are ready,” said Captain Mitchell.
All the Rangers, including Sean, got on board the Titanium Ranger’s special shuttle and flew to the top of the dormant volcano where Diabolico had hidden the XR2. They tied a very strong rope around Sean’s boots at his ankles. “Sean, you must go down head first so you can get the XR2 box with your hands” said Ryan. “We will be up here holding the rope so you don’t fall. Now everyone morph so we will be strong.”
Soon they were lowering Sean into the hole. Sean had a light on his helmet so he could see as he went down. It was so very deep and so narrow that his shoulders rubbed against the sides as he went down.
“Can you see it?” yelled Ryan.
“Not yet!” yelled Sean. “Lower me some more.”
Soon Sean saw a shiny silver box at the bottom of the hole. “I can see it! I can’t quite reach it. I need more rope!”
The Rangers let out more rope as they held it tightly so Sean would not fall. At last Sean was able to grab the box. “Got it! Pull me up!” he shouted.
“OK, let’s be careful about this” said Ryan. “If he drops it or bangs it against the wall, the poison will escape!”
Slowly they started pulling Sean upward. Just then the ground started to shake. “Oh no!” cried the Pink Ranger. “The volcano is starting to erupt! Pull faster! Pull faster! Sean, are you OK?”
Sean could not hear the Rangers above. All he could hear was the rumble of the volcano! All he could think of was – “I must not drop this box!”
“Pull! Pull! Pull everyone! We’ve got to get him out of there!” The Rangers pulled the rope. Suddenly a rock popped loose from the side and hit Sean in the side of his head! It hurt very badly but he held on tight to the box with both his hands. Just as the Rangers pulled him through the opening of the hole, Sean passed out!
When he woke up Sean was back at the Power Ranger base. “What happened?” he asked, rubbing his head where a bandage had been placed.
“You did it, Sean! You got the XR2 and we were able to take off in the shuttle before the volcano exploded! You have a bump on your head but the doctor said you will be fine.” explained Ryan. “We will get you back to your mom and dad tomorrow. If we ever need another Junior Power Ranger, we know where to find you. Thank you for your help. You saved the people of earth. Remember, tell no one that you are a Power Ranger, OK?”
“OK” said Sean with a big smile on his face!

The Robber: A True Story
One day Sean & Gram stopped at the Eckard Drug Store. No one was sick. We didn’t need medicine. What we needed was a new toy for Sean and Eckard’s usually had a good supply of toys.
We walked in the store and started down the toy isle. We looked for a few minutes but Sean could not find the toy he wanted.
Suddenly we heard a woman yell, “Watch out Mom! What out! Don’t let him get away”!
Gram did not know what was happening so she grabbed Sean & pulled.

The Great Thanksgiving Parade
Now it was known by one and all in the family that Sean Smith aged 2 ½ years loved to march.
Mostly he marched with Gram. They marched through the den and kitchen, around the breakfast table and back again.
Hup two, three, four.
Hup two, three, four.
Sometimes they carried their small American flags – sometimes they blew on the toy horns and sometimes they carried the blue & white pom poms Gram had gotten at a Dallas Cowboy football game.
“Come on Gram, us march” Sean would say. “Here’s yours flag – here’s Sean’s flag. Come on Gram, us march.”
So came Thanksgiving Day at Bo & Gram’s house. Maw Maw was there. Aunt Be was there. Me Maw was there. Mommy, Daddy, Bo and Gram were there too. After a big turkey dinner, Sean said “Us march! Here flag for you, Maw Maw,” he said handing her one of his small American flags. “Here flag for you Me Maw.”

The Great Thanksgiving Houston Adventure
When Sean was three years old, Bo and Gram came up with the idea of going to Houston to see the Thanksgiving Day Parade. “Good idea!” said Mom. “Good idea!” said Dad. “Good idea!” said MeMaw. “Me Too!” said Sean.
The plan was Bo & Gram would pick Sean up from school (PRI) early Wednesday afternoon and take off for Houston. They would check into the Hyatt Regency Hotel and get all the room keys. Mom, Dad & MeMaw would come to Houston as soon as they finished work at 5 o’clock.
“Are you ready to go to Houston?” Gram yelled across the school playground to Sean as he was swinging on one of the swing sets.
“Gram!” should Sean as he bolted out of the swing & started running towards her.
“Yea!” said Gram as Sean reached her arms & she picked him up with a big hug. “Time for fun! Get your backpack from your cubby. Bo is waiting in the car.”
On the way to Houston, Gram rode in the backseat with Sean. They played with Sean’s little airplanes & ‘hot wheel’ cars. They sang songs and looked out the car windows. There was a lot of “what’s that Gram?” and “where’s Houston Bo?”
Before long they saw the big tall buildings of downtown Houston. “There it is!” squealed Sean. “I see it!”
“Yep. There it is” said Bo.
“We are going to spend the nigh in one of these tall buildings” said Gram.
“Oh, my!” said Sean.
As the car pulled into the parking garage of the hotel, a valet brought a cart to load the luggage. “Would you like to ride on the cart young man?” he asked Sean.
“Yes!” replied Sean.
The nice black man picked Sean up and put him right on top of the suitcases and off they went. As they entered the hotel lobby, Sean held tightly to the brass sides of the cart and looked up & up & up! The lobby was an open space with its ceiling up the full twenty-five floors of the hotel. Along one wall were glass elevators running up & down. You could see the people inside as they went up, up, up to their rooms or came down, down, down to the lobby. The huge lobby was decorated for Christmas with twinkling lights and you could hear music coming from the Baby Grande piano in the garden like restaurant on one side of the lobby.
“Look Gram!” said Sean as he, Gram & the valet waited for Bo to register them into the hotel.
“I see them,” said Gram. “We are going to ride on one of these elevators as soon as Bo gets our room keys.”

The Fast One
The ‘Fast One’ sat on the runway ready for take-off. It was a beautiful airplane. Dark flue & trimmed in yellow, it was an exact copy of one of the famous Blue Angels of the U.S. Navy.
A tiny hand take hold of the four-inch long plane, a little voice makes engine noises and the sleek plane takes off. Around & around the room the little plane flies. “I come in for a landing – look Gram I come in for a landing,” shouts 2 ½ year old Sean.
“OK, Gram sees you. Come in for a landing. Oh! That was a very good landing.”
“I take off again,” says Sean.
Of all the many toys that 2 ½ year old Sean had, and he had many for Santa, Mom & Dad, Gram & Bo and even Aunt Be had been very generous, his very favorite was the tiny ‘Blue Angel’.
Sean loved it so much it always came to Gram & Bo’s when Sean spent the night & it was taken back home after each visit.
Whoa unto him that forgot ‘The Fast One’. That’s what Sean called it. No one knew why it was ‘The Fast One’ for Sean had many larger planes, even ones that made realistic airplane sounds. He had lots & lots of small planes, helicopters & even a space shuttle but ‘The Fast One’ was the best! If it was forgotten and left at home – many tears would fall until someone got in the car and went to get it – for ‘The Fast One’ always went with Sean age 2 ½.

The Carousel
It was Christmas time. The big shopping mall was overflowing with hurried shoppers. Mom & Gram were on their first Christmas shopping trip. This would over the years become a tradition for Mom & Gram – because Bo & Daddy were kinda “Bah! Humbug!” about Christmas – but Mom & Gram loved Christmas & now they really loved Christmas. Why? Because now they had a wonderful little boy named Sean to enjoy Christmas with. Sean was seven months old & this was his very first Christmas.
Sean had been such a good baby on the hour-long car trip from Nacogdoches to Longview. Mom had heard that the Longview Mall was very pretty at Christmas time, with each store putting up the pretty red, green & gold decorations. Everywhere were strung twinkling mini lights. Christmas carols floated thru the air as it came from speakers throughout the mall.
Mom had put Sean in his stroller & the first annual Christmas Shop began.

The Airplane Ride
“Get up Sean” said Daddy as he walked down the hall past Sean’s room. “It’s time for our vacation.”
Sean, aged 3, was lying in his bed watching a TV program & he didn’t really pay Daddy any attention.
“Get up Sean,” said Mommy as she walked into Sean’s room carrying a stack of clean clothes. “Today we are going to see Aunt Be.”
Still Sean just kept watching his TV program.
Daddy came back down the hall past Sean’s room carrying two suitcases. This time Sean paid attention. He hopped out of his little bed. He was wearing only his briefs and a T-shirt.
“Wait, Daddy! Wait! Don’t move! Let me get my shoes! Don’t move Daddy – don’t go get on the airplane without me!” He ran into the living room frantically looking for his Nikes. “Here they are! Here they are!” He sat down on the carpet, trying to put them on.
Mommy & Daddy thought “What a site Sean was, now that today was indeed the day for his first airplane trip.”
“Sean, are your shoes all you need?” asked Mommy. “Do you think you might need to put on some clothes?”
“Oh! OK – that’s cool,” said Sean, getting up & running back into his room.
“We also need to pack your suitcase,” said Mommy as she followed him back into his room.

Sean at Two
At age two, Sean’s big round brown-black eyes give a split second warning just before he does something ‘naughty’. This of course does not happen often because to me his Gram, he is almost perfection.
“Come on Gram, playdough!” he says as he pulls my hand with his warm little fingers.
“OK” I say. “You get the cookie cutters, Gram will get the playdough.”
“Okey! Okey!” says Sean running to the dining room buffet & pulling out the bottom drawers.
“There they are…!” he yells. “I get them! I get them!”
Bringing the box of cookie cutters to the breakfast table, Sean climbs into his special booster seat attached to one of the chairs.
“Here’s the playdough,” I say. “Which color do you want?”
“Orange!” squeals Sean.

Sean and The Flag
I do not know how patriotic Sean will be when he is all grown up but I can tell you from the very beginning of his life, he loved the American flag.
As a small baby, one of the first places Sean’s mom & dad took him was to football games. Maybe because he was lying on his back and could not see much, he could see ‘Old Glory’ flying on the tall pole at the end of the football field. You will have to ask Bert & Elizabeth what his very first word was but I know the words star & flag were among his very first.

Nak
When Sean was two years old, he was just starting to enjoy playing in Bo & Gram’s swimming pool. He would stand on the steps, where the water was shallow, and play and play with colored cups – red, blue, green, purple & yellow. He would fill each cup up with pool water, then he would pour it out and start all over again. Another fun game was for grams to take him in her arms and go into water about four feet deep. There Gram would hold his hands while his feet rested on her knees. Around and around they would go – singing ‘Ring Around the Roses’ and when ‘Ashes Ashes We All Fall Down’ came – under the water they would go!
One, Two, Three, Jump! Was another good game. Standing on the side of the pool, Sean would count and then jump into Daddy’s, Bo’s or Mom’s arms. Everyone was expected to clap loudly after each jump.
Gram always kept a wicker basket filled with snacks on the table by the pool and also a small ice chest filled with soft drinks & juice. When each person was hungry, he would help himself to cookies, chips, etc.
Well… without thinking too much about it – Gram would take Sean out of the pool when he seemed tired or cold. She would wrap him in a big ole beach towel and set him in a big lounge chair by the pool. She would then get the wicker basket, put it in front of him and let Sean pick out which snack he would like. Gram then got a soda from the ice chest, put a straw in it, and gave Sean his drink. For several weeks this is how Sean played in the pool and enjoyed his snack.
One day Gram put Sean in his small play pool out on the driveway. He played & played. He even sprayed the water hose as he pretended to be a fireman. After a long fun time playing, Sean said, “towel”. Gram got a towel and wrapped him up. Daddy was already there to take Sean home – so Gram hurried to put Sean’s clothes on him. All the time Gram was dressing him, Sean was saying a word Gram could not understand. “Nak, Nak, Nak” Sean said. “Is he saying nat?” asked Gram. “You know a nat was bothering him the other day. But I don’t see a nat.”
“Nak, Nak, Nak” said Sean. “Bo, what is he saying?” asked Gram. “I don’t know,” said Bo.
“Nak, Nak, Nak” said Sean. “Oh, my gosh!” said Gram. “I know what he’s saying. He’s asking for his snack! Oh my little Sean, Gram is soooo sorry! I forgot your snack.” Out came the wicker basket. A little face lit up & little hands clapped and little Sean ?????????

Magic Reindeer Food
When Sean came to Texas for Christmas, he brought ‘magic reindeer food’. “How does it work?” asked Gram.
Sean told her that it should be scattered on the porches and yard on Christmas Eve. Rudolph would smell the ‘magic food’ and bring Santa and his sleigh of toys right down to our house. So, when it started getting late on Christmas Eve, we scattered the food. We got Santa’s milk and cookies ready and left the house to go see a movie. Sean, Gram and Mom went to see the ‘Grinch’. Dad, Bo, Aunt Be and David went to another movie.
When we got home, Sean ran into the house and guess what??? That ‘magic reindeer food’ really worked! Santa had been to our house!

Kindermusik
His tan little face had the expression of being very proud of himself. He as not smiling but the flow in those dark brown eyes said everything. He looked so cute in his little khaki & navy short overalls & navy shirt. His little brown legs came down into matching socks & navy shoes. Mommy had tried to comb his hair. By now, it was kinda mess up but looked just fine. He bowed slowly from the waist at the end of each song. None of the other children bowed or curtsied, only Sean, as he acknowledged the audience of parents & grandparents clapping their approval after each song.
Sean would be three years old in two more days and this was his very first recital. He had been going to music class all year and this was the ‘Kindermusik Demonstration Recital’.
Mommy & Daddy were there. Bo & Gram were there. MeMaw was there and so was Mom’s friend Melissa. Daddy made video as the class sang ‘Three Blue Pigeons’, ‘Ram Sam Sam’, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear’, ‘Eensy Weensy Spider’, ‘Hokey Pokey’ & ‘Little Mister Robin’.
At the end of the program, Sean ran from the stage & grabbed Daddy’s long tall log – looked way up at Daddy and said with all the pride of a great performer ‘I dood it!”
The day was just beginning for this afternoon would be Sean’s third birthday party!

John Wayne
When Sean Smith age 2 ½ is really feeling great, he reminds me, for all the world, of John Wayne. I usually notice this when the whole family is leaving our house to go someplace special. It could be going to Houston to see a ‘Barney’ concert or something as simple as going to ‘Old McDonalds’ to eat – but as we walk out the door – I’m usually behind Sean. He cocks his little head to the right, swings his right arm across his body with every step and walks just like John Wayne! You can tell by looking at him that all is ‘right with the world’!
Bo says, “He’s a cocky little fart!”
Gram says, “There he goes – my own little John Wayne!” May he always be so happy!
